Paul Ryan petition: Why was there a petition to remove Paul Ryan from the position of Speaker of the House?
As you may be aware Republican Paul Ryan was elected as the Speaker of the House of Representatives in 2015, after serving over 20 years as a congressman. Ryan then went on to serve as the Speaker of the House until January 2019, when Democratic political Nancy Pelosi was chosen to fill the role which Ryan decided not to contest.
Towards the end of 2018, a petition was put in motion by Paul Ryan’s detractors to try and get Ryan removed from his position as the Speaker of the House. You may be wondering why Ryan was targeted by a petition which was put in motion by Republicans. The simple answer is that over the years Ryan had become more outspoken against the current President of the United States, fellow Republican Donald Trump.
Many of Trump’s supporters wanted to see Ryan removed from his influential position as Speaker of the House, as they believed that it was unprofessional for Ryan to voice his objections about President Donald Trump’s presidency and policies. Especially as Ryan was one of the few Republicans in Congress to vote against some of the legislative bills which President Donald Trump tried to pass through Congress.
Was the petition against Paul Ryan successful?
You may be curious if the petition against Paul Ryan was successful. The answer is rather complicated. Firstly while the petition against Paul Ryan gained a lot of traction with die hard Donald Trump supporters around the country, Ryan was not removed from his position as the Speaker of The House. So at first glance, you might say that Trump’s supporters’ petition against Paul Ryan was unsuccessful.
However, due to the drama which surrounded the position, Ryan decided not to campaign for re-election of his position and was replaced by Democrat Nancy Pelosi, So some individuals may argue that the petition against Paul Ryan was successful. As in the end the petition’s advocates got what they wanted, to have Ryan removed from his position as The Speaker of the House of Representatives. Although the very same individuals would have been severely disappointed when a Democrat was swiftly elected as the new Speaker of the House. As the Speaker of the House is arguably the single most influential position in Congress.
What did the individuals who wished to have Paul Ryan thrown from his position want to achieve:
The fervent Trump Supporters who started the petition to have Paul Ryan removed from his influential position in Congress, wanted to have a staunch pro Trump congressman or woman elected as The Speaker of the House. An individual who would back all of President Donald Trump’s decisions and legislative bills.
Hopefully you now have a clearer understanding of both sides of the story and why some Republicans wished to remove Paul Ryan from the position of Speaker of the House.
