Working with models is a skill every professional photographer must master, and no photographer has shot more famous subjects than Bruce Weber Photographer. In this article, we’ll be giving nine tips on the business of photographing models, which you can use to take your own shots to the next level.
1) Get to Know Your Model
Every photographer needs to realize that no model will ever shoot well if they don’t want to be there. Even if this isn’t what’s written in your contract – even if the model is getting paid – always take the time to get to know them and make them feel comfortable. This will result in better shots and a more relaxed atmosphere on set.
2) Use Professional Lighting
One of the defining features of Bruce Weber’s photography is his use of natural light, but that doesn’t mean you can’t use professional lighting to great effect. In fact, using professional lighting will often make your models look even better.
3) Find a Good Location
Where you shoot is just as important as how you light it. A good location can make all the difference in the world, and it’s worth taking the time to find somewhere that will complement your model’s features. It’s also a good idea to check that your location doesn’t have any distracting elements, such as litter or graffiti.
4) Don’t Cut Off Limbs
It’s very important to make sure you don’t cut off any limbs when photographing your model, and in general, it’s a good idea to avoid cropping subjects out of the frame entirely. While cropping is a powerful tool for creative photographers, amateur shots are often ruined by sloppy compositing or visible signs of post-editing.
5) Make Sure You Have Great Lenses
Bruce Weber uses some very expensive lenses, and if you want to take professional quality photographs, I recommend that you do the same. Try to shoot with prime lenses whenever you can, as these will give you the best optical quality.
6) Get Creative with Props
When shooting professional models, it’s important to develop unique ideas for your photoshoots instead of just settling for normal portrait-style shots. To do this, you’ll have to think creatively about what sorts of props to use. For example, Bruce Weber shoots a lot of shoes, so maybe you could try photographing your subject wearing different articles of clothing.
7) Use Different Angles and Camera Settings
Shooting from above or below can change the entire dynamic of your shot, so it’s vital that you get creative with your angles and think about using different camera settings. Bruce Weber shoots all his models with a 50mm prime lens, so maybe you should try something similar.
8) Make Sure the Lighting is Even
When shooting professional models, it’s important to make sure that all parts of your subject are lit evenly because this will result in more flattering photographs. On the other hand, if the lighting isn’t even, your model will often look very “hot” or “cold,” which makes for bad shots.
9) Make Sure You Shoot in RAW
Whenever you’re shooting professional models, it’s important to shoot in RAW instead of JPEG, as this gives you more flexibility with editing. For example, you can increase the dynamic range of your photos and fix any issues with white balance.
