Lies You Shouldn’t Tell Your Home Insurance Agent

Insurance is a necessary part of life. Homeowners insurance protects you and your home from unforeseen events such as natural disasters, theft, or fire. Whether you have renters insurance to protect your tenants or car insurance for the family vehicle, the person selling you an insurance policy like york insurance must have all the information they need about your property so they can give you the right quote.

Before you make a claim with your home insurance company and get yourself in trouble, keep these lies from becoming a reality:

1. Don’t Lie About Your Level Of Coverage

Always tell the truth about your level of coverage. There is no point in lying and then getting into an accident or being robbed, only to find out later that you don’t have enough insurance cover for a claim.

It’s also not a great idea to claim more than what you need because doing so may raise questions with the insurer over time about whether or not they can trust how much information you provide. If there are things that might create suspicion around how much you’re insured for, they’ll question your motives behind changing policies or providing misleading info on previous claims.

2. Don’t Lie To Cover Up Any Preexisting Conditions Or Damages

This will raise your premium and make it more difficult for you to receive compensation. If something happens at your house, that’s not on the list of known risks, mention it when you renew during open enrollment time each year.

And if things are going wrong with an old part of the structure, address those repairs before they become problems down the line and ask what could happen then. This allows them to explain why specific exclusions exist.

3. Don’t Lie About The Cost Of Repairs

It may be tempting to inflate the cost of repairs to get a higher payout from your insurance company, but you could end up paying for it much more. Falsely reporting damages can result in fines or even criminal charges if discovered by law enforcement officials and reported. You may also receive only partial compensation at best should an issue with false reporting come out during litigation.

4. Don’t Lie About Where You Live

You might have been there. You sign up for a service with a name-brand company, but when the representative asks you where you live, your home address doesn’t match what they have on file.

So instead of telling them that you recently moved and need to update your information in their system, you tell them that it was already updated because you forgot about updating your account after moving into this new house.

5. Don’t Lie About Your Dog

You should always tell your insurance company about any pets you have. If you don’t, and a pet causes damage to the home or contents, that is considered an accident and not covered by homeowners insurance.

Even though some companies will cover damages caused by animals as long as they’re disclosed in advance, there are often limits placed on what types of animal-related incidents are excluded from coverage (e.g., dog bites). So be sure to read through those exclusions before submitting your claim for damages, or you could be liable for the costs.

The Bottom Line

When you are shopping for a new home insurance plan, it is vital to have the correct information. You should be honest about your details and disclose any changes that may affect your premiums or coverage.
