When you are buying a new product or looking for a service like a restaurant or a dentist, the smartest thing has always been to check out the reviews online and find out what other people are saying about their experiences with certain products or certain services. Unfortunately however, there are some occasions where you just can’t trust a review, and that is because it is not true. It is for this reason in fact that we have amazing sites such as Topconsumerreviews which helps us to get to the bottom of whether or not the reviews which we are reading are in fact legitimate.
So why is it that we can’t always trust these comments which are supposed to help us decide on whether or not we spend our money with a company? Let’s take a look.
Importance
The first thing which we have to look at is just how important reviews are for businesses, especially in light of their competition. If we take restaurants for example, arguably the place where reviews are more important than ever, what is it that makes you select one Italian restaurant over another when you are in a new town? The review. The reputation of a business is heavily based on the review, and that equals dollars and cents.
False
It is because of this importance that some companies will invest in fake reviews, or perhaps even get family and friends to leave false positives if they think that their reviews may not be quite where they would like them to be. If that hasn’t blown your mind then check this out, there are places which are actually called review farms where people spend their days leaving fake reviews for their clients in order to boost their online reputation and to help with their product sales, or their attraction to new customers. This is not a widespread thing and of course it is highly unlikely that a family run restaurant is going to invest huge amounts of money in false reviews, but it is something which you should always bear in mind when you are reading reviews.
Spotting a Fake
There are some warning signs of a possible fall review, but these are not always cast iron guarantees that the review which you are reading is in fact a fake one. For example many of these review farms exist in India or in other parts of Asia and so it will often read like a foreigner speaking English rather than a native speaker. Other possible warning signs include overdoing it on the information, adding irrelevant info to the review, a person who has never left a review before and also if you see a slew of terrible reviews and then a spike in positive ones, it is highly likely that the company have paid to have their reviews fixed.
This is not to say that every review is false, but you should be aware that they exist.
